The phases were separated and the aqueous phase was extracted with methylene chloride. The extracts and the organic phase were combined, washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to afford 2 (5.51 g, 117percent) as a dark orange oil: 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) delta 7.59 (d, J=1.1 Hz, 1H), 7.51 (d, J=1.1 Hz, 1H), 2.91 (q, J=7.3 Hz, 2H), 1.23 (t, J=7.3 Hz, 3H); ESI MS m/z 219 [C7H7BrOS+H]+.
